Product Spotlight is my outlet for raving about my favorite bookish products. I don’t believe in gatekeeping and will gladly share any cool and/or helpful items I come across. If it has a Product Spotlight post, I promise that I actually own the product and am speaking from my own real experiences.
Clip-on book lights are designed to allow readers to stay up till the wee hours of the morning indulging in literary splendor without disturbing their partners or roommates. They are a great nightstand addition for couples who like to go to bed together, but may not actually fall asleep at the same time.
This is the exact version of this item that I own and am reviewing.
What I Love About it.
Brightness
The clip-on book light emits the perfect amount and type of light for me. The warm white light allows me to read for extended periods of time with no strain on my eyes. It’s also bright enough to illuminate the entirety of my book (both sides simultaneously) but keeps the beam aimed down and away from my husband when he is sleeping.

Flexibility
The head of this light cannot be twisted to redirect the beam to a specific side, but that has not hindered my reading in any way. It can be adjusted up and down, though, which helps make the beam wider or narrower depending on the size of your book. It also helps reduce the illumination around you even more if you need to, by focusing more of the light directly on the book if you bend it down closer to the pages.
Portability
It’s basically weightless. Officially on the Amazon listing, the item weight is listed as 1.6 ounces. You can throw it in any weekender bag, luggage, or purse and not even think twice about it. The one I own is made out of a thick sturdy plastic, holding up well when packed up for any trips.
Battery Powered
This pro is heavily dependent on personal preference. I like not having to worry about a cable or charging block to go with my light when I throw it in a bag. I may change my mind on this the day the battery runs out on me and I don’t have spares readily available, but I’ll cross that emotional bridge when I get there. Might be a good idea to grab some spare batteries now and stick them in my nightstand.
What Could Be Better.
Stability
The clip on my light is a bit big and bulky, so it becomes a slight issue when I’m reading paperback books. The plastic material it’s made of does keep it from sliding around while I’m reading, but the bulkiness of the clip makes it very unstable if I only clip it to the back cover of a paperback. I’ve found that it’s much more stable if I clip it to the back cover plus a few pages. This is fine until I get to the end of the book and have to move the clip from the back cover with a few pages to the front cover with a few pages. This is absolutely not a deal breaker for me and does not stop me from using the clip-on book light, but it’s a hair inconvenient and I wanted to acknowledge that. This is not an issue when I read hardcover books, as the covers are usually thick enough to keep the light stable.
Easy to Lose
In the same sense of how the TV remote is always disappearing, this booger is master of the vanishing act. But since I’m the only one in our household who uses it, I can only blame myself for losing track of it. It may help to get a clip-on light in a bright color or fun pattern like this one. Mine is just black with a couple of blue accent pieces.
Not Dimmable
There have been times where I wished that the light was somewhat dimmable. This has mainly been the case when I’ve found a comfortable reading position that puts the book slightly elevated and tilted away from me, leaving the light to shine in my eyes. Luckily, there are versions like this one that have dimming options.
Is it worth the Money?
Considering that versions like the one I own are priced as low as $10 - ABSOLUTELY.
If you’re a night owl who loves to read in bed, but has to listen to someone else grumble about leaving a lamp on, you need a clip-on book light. I’m not sure how I went so long without one, but don’t make the same mistake as me! There are so many varieties of this nifty gadget available that you could have one for each day of the week.
Like this one that’s giving literature professor’s desk lamp energy. Or this mini ring light one that is perfect for readers of all ages. For the younger readers (and kids at heart), this one comes in over twenty different cute character patterns.
