Monthly Wrap-Up: March 2024

In the future, I’ll do these wrap-ups earlier in the month, but I launched ROONIE at the very end of March and am just now getting around to this first one! I’ll use this monthly blog to fill you in on what I read in the previous month with quick reviews on each book. My favorite books will get individual in-depth reviews published as part of my Five Star Fix blog series.

As time goes by and ROONIE grows, I’ll also add milestone achievements and interesting events from the previous month in these monthly wrap-ups.

The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose

Overall Rating: 3.5 Stars

Format: Audiobook on Spotify

I was not crazy about this book, but I also did not hate it. The idea of a female criminal defense attorney representing her husband in court over his suspected involvement in the extremely violent murder of his mistress just made me feel icky. Removing my lack of understanding for how Sarah could be executing her duties on behalf of her husband, the story kept me engaged and guessing the whole time. By the end, I had part of it figured out but not all of it and was still left with my eyebrows in my hairline.

There was a lot of lead up to the trial in the book, but not much coverage of the actual trial. I was left a bit underwhelmed by this because I really wanted to know exactly what evidence would be used and how. It also led to what felt like a rushed ending, but did ultimately all tie together and make sense. I am curious to read more by Jeneva Rose in the future.

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

Overall Rating: 4.0 Stars

Format: Audiobook on Spotify

The Ex Hex was charming beyond belief! There is a part of me that wishes I would have saved this read for the fall season, when the leaves are changing and everyone is gearing up for Halloween, but I don’t think reading it out of season took away from the story at all. It was a very cozy second chance rom-com with high(ish) stakes and the perfect sprinkle of spice. I’ll definitely be adding the other books in this series to my TBR.

This was almost a five star read for me, honestly. I was sure it would get a 5.0 star review up until the last few chapters. The ending just felt too easy and Rhys (yes, I thought of ACOTAR every time his name was mentioned) was obnoxiously flippant even after acknowledging that perhaps sometimes he needed to take things a little more seriously. If Graves Glen, GA was a real place, I would absolutely be planning a trip out there this October.

Things we Never Got Over by Lucy Score

Overall Rating: 1.0 Star

Format: Physical Paperback

I truly do not understand how this book has maintained a 4.0+ star rating on Goodreads. There was so much hype and I saw so many other readers swooning over Knox Morgan that I had very high expectations for this read. I was ready to be swept away by the “bearded, bad-boy barber” from Knockemout, Virginia, but instead was frustrated beyond belief and rolling my eyes continuously over his lack of boundaries, disregard for Naomi’s wants, and never ending list of red flags.

There isn’t a single character in this book that I can really say I was rooting for or connected with. Naomi was a pushover, Knox was Knox, and everyone else was encouraging of their toxic relationship. To make matters worse, the book is almost six hundred pages long… for absolutely no reason. There is so much fluff and redundancy, I had to force myself to actually finish it.

I may give Lucy Score another chance, but I will not be reading any of the other books in this series.

Only a Monster by Vanessa Len

Overall Rating: 4.0 Stars

Format: Physical Paperback

This book was a Christmas gift hand picked for me by my husband. It wasn’t even on my TBR list before he gave it to me and I am so happy he did! It was an easy read that followed a teenage girl named Joan who just found out her family has a dark secret and the boy she likes, Nick, is determined to stop them by any means necessary. I will leave out the spoilers, but Joan must work with a member from a rival family to master her newfound ability of time travel if she wants to stop Nick and save her family.

There is suspense, action, heartache, and tension all wrapped up in this story and I enjoyed every minute of it. The writing style is more along the lines of teen/young adult and there is no actual spice in the story, if that’s your cup of tea. I’ll definitely be adding the other books in this series to my TBR - Never a Hero (#2) was published last year and the third book is expected some time this year.
